Biology and Anatomy
Biology
For 8 years I’ve taught freshman biology at all levels: On-level, Advanced, and Honors. I had the opportunity to teach the course at three levels, which includes further differentiating the lessons between each group and tailoring the learning goals.
Inspiring students to go deeper into the intricacies of biology is no easy task. However, I feel it is important for students to understand the structure and function of the parts of biology, from cell and organelles, to whole body systems and ecological interactions.
Anatomy
Throughout the course, I endeavor to systematically break down the human body and how the parts work together and separately to maintain homeostasis. This approach allowed for a culminating lab with a dissection and full lab report that detailed all body systems.
In addition to body systems, the students researched genetic mutations that can occur spontaneously or be congenital in nature. Students took what they learned and reflected on examples in their families or people they know that may have a mutation.
Throughout my tenure, I have been on committees for the review and re-design of science curriculum, for both Biology and Anatomy and Physiology curriculums.
